Deep into the "Narrows" in Zion National Park, Utah.

This image was taken several hours into a hike upriver in the world-famous Zion Narrows. Although this water was only ankle deep, I had to trek through water that was waist deep to get to this point. Since it was November and chilly, I rented a dry suit up to my chest, water shoes, a walking stick and a very large dry bag to cover my photography gear. This is among the best hikes in the entire US National Park system. It can only be hiked when there is no chance of rain. The towering Navajo Sandstone walls reach heights of 1000' feet, but do not absorb any water. Consequently, a flash flood miles away can be deadly.

Bryce Snow Storm

Everyone goes to Bryce for the burnt orange hoodoos. The day I arrived a nice little snow storm was brewing. The wind was howling and the light was playing peek a boo through the clouds. I don't get a lot of snow in Southern California, so I really happy to stay outside and photograph the storm. Taken with my Tamron SP 15-30 f/2.8, 1/60th sec at f/13.

A sunrise close up shot of the sandstone in Zion reveals the delicate details. This pre-dawn hike was fun. It was almost like taking two completely different hikes. One hike in the dark and one in the light that revealed wonderful details I could not see on the way out.

The mountains in Zion are so large that perspective on their size is easily lost. I chose the square perspective to force the viewer's eyes to look differently at these beautiful craggy mountains.

Bottom of the Narrows - Zion

Glad I had my waders and dry bag so I could hop into the water above my waist to get this shot. This was taken at the bottom of the Narrows in Zion. It was my first jump into the water with all my camera gear in a dry bag. I was a bit nervous at first, but it all worked out and my gear was completely dry.

Memory Rock

While walking in the narrows it is very easy to look up all day at the majestic red stone walls. I almost missed this precious little stone tribute to Grandpa Joe!

The Narrows. You can almost feel the power of water eroding the rocks when you look at the background in this image. The rock is literally carved from the flow of water downstream after thousands of years.
