Prints and Framing

Many different print sizes, print types, and framing options are available through the professional print labs I use when you purchase images from my site. Glossy, matte, lustre, even metallic photographic prints are available. In 2017, I added prints on wood and acrylic metal. See my guide to print types at the bottom of the page if you have questions.

You can buy framed prints or, for something more contemporary, have your image printed on borderless metal. The ink is literally fused onto the metal. They look GREAT! What is the difference between a glossy, matte, lustre or metallic print?

Glossy prints are smooth and shiny and have a reflective surface. Glossy prints usually have bright colors and more saturation. Glossy prints may stick to glass so caution must be taken to frame the prints appropriately. Glossy prints will show fingerprints and smudges.  Depending on the lighting where the print will be displayed you may or may not want a reflective print.

Matte prints are smooth and non-glare. Matte prints tend to have lower contrast but more texture and fingerprints are less visible. Matte prints are often used for portrait and wedding photos, and they are an excellent choice for black and white photography.

Lustre prints have a slight gloss and deeper saturation than matte prints. Lustre is less reflective than glossy, making it an excellent choice for wall display when printed on professional grade paper.

Metallic prints are a personal favorite of mine. I use them in many of my black and white prints when I want the details of my images to really pop. Metallic prints really catch the eye when properly framed and displayed with good lighting. Metal prints are quite durable, provide excellent sharpness, and have an almost chrome-like appearance to the eye.  Many people also like metal prints to show deep rich colors.

Printing on metal - Not to be confused with printing a metallic image on paper, images can also be printed and fused literally onto metal. This is a durable, contemporary look. I have several images printed on metal hanging in my home. I like them because they are so durable, they are scratch resistant, I've even gotten water on them and just wiped them off. This makes them especially good choices for images you might hang in bathrooms or other places where moisture is a potential problem. The prints are very thin and float on the wall. If you have never tried one, I highly recommend them.

Professional print labs make a huge difference in the quality of your images. All prints are definitely NOT created equal. If you order the identical print from different labs you will see differences in saturation and sharpness. If you want a great image order from one of my professional print labs, not the lowest price chain store. Your eyes will thank you.
